Universal Suffrage and the Right to Vote
Quote: "I expect to do more work for woman suffrage in the next decade than ever before." - Susan Anthony
Suffrage
In 1900 only one country allowed women to vote
By 1950 there were 69 countries that allowed women the right to vote.
By 1975 there were 129 countires that allowed women the right to vote
Despite the right to vote their were still differences in education and pay
Equality was not yet acheived.
The Women's Rights Movement.
The modern women’s rights movement began with Betty Frieden’s “TheFeminine Mystique” a book about women being dissatisfied with their role.
1966 She founded the National Organization for Women (NOW)
They fought for the Equal Rights Amendment, which prohibited discrimination by gender
It was defeated
1973 the Supreme Court struck down laws which prohibited abortion
1970 Gloria Steinem took over NOW
The group split over the abortion issue in the 1980s
Summary: Women slowly gained rights throughout the 20th century. They achieved voting early on but this did not assure equality. There were still inequalities in economics and opportunity. In the 1960s another push for equality occured. It looked at issues such as abortion and Birth Control along with giving womem the same opportunities to be successful that men were given.
