The Balfour Declaration, 1917
Quote: "His Majesty's Government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a
national home for the Jewish people." A.J. Balfour
The British promised to set up a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The British mandate would remain under British control.
The complication however, was that the British had promised the Arabs in the region independance.
Neither promise was fullfilled. There was however, a large wave of Jewish people coming to the area as Hitler came to power in Europe. In 1918 there were approximately 60,000 Jews and by 1939 there were approximately 630,000 Jews.
This was the beginning of the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
Summary: The Balfour Declaration was a partial cause of one of the largest ongoing conflicts between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Due to both the Jewish and the Arabs being promised the same area by the British the promises could never be granted. The promises which were not granted then esculated the tensions. There would have to be a way to half grant each promise and that was where the UN took control in 1947 to eventually make the partition.
