Russian Civil War 1919-1921
The Bolsheviks were the "Reds" and all the groups who opposed them were the "Whites"
The "Whites" largely consisted of Tsarist officers, Cossacks, Bourgeoisie, Outlawed political groups, and international community.
In 1918 the "Whites" won early victories but under Leon Trotsky the "Reds" managed to change that around.
The following conditions helped the Reds to defeat the Whites. They were more organized and central, allied intervention was only half-hearted, Reds controlled the industry and had the majority of the population. The lower class was largely Red and the peasants were neutral. The middle and upper class were largely White.
The Reds defeated the Whites.
Summary: The Russian Civil War was a battle between people of the same country. Both sides had different ideas of what they wanted for Russia. Eventually the Reds won on account that their many forces had better attack plans and organization.
