Soweto Massacre

apart from one another, to breed suspicion, hatred and violence, and to keep us
backward. Education is formulated so as to reproduce this society of racism and
exploitation."- Congress of South African Students
1976 black students protested that they had to be educated in Afrikaans.
The main revolt was in the the township of Soweto but it also occured in other townships. It resulted in 575 deaths.
A Prominent youth leader by the name of Steve Biko was beaten to death by the police.
Youth became very active with the ANC following this event.
“Total Strategy” was devoloped where they sabotaged SA cities.
Civil disobedience, strikes, boycotts and even more violent measures continued and increased.
Summary: The Soweto Massacre was a student led protest that led to police involvement and many beig killed. The roots of the revolt were that the students were protesting being educated in Afrikaans. This event really got the youth involved in the issues of the Apartheid.
