Operation Barbarossa
Barbarossa "Red Beard" was the code name for the German attack on Russia in June 1941.
Despite warnings this was a complete surprise for Russia.
The attack breaks to non-aggression pact signed in 1939.
The front for the battle was 2000 miles long.
The Red Army was surprised with Blitzkrieg tactics.
The Nazis were actually briefly seen as liberators.
The Russian peasants began the scorched earth policy which involved burning all the crops and shelters.
Leningrad was beseiged, Kiev was captured, Crimea was reached and so were the outskirts of Moscow.
The cold winter weather however, halted the Germans.
Almost 2 million Red Army troops were taken prisoner.
