Kuwait and the Gulf War, 1991
Quote: "A line has been drawn in the sand...Withdraw from Kuwait unconditionally and
immediately, or face the terrible consequences." -
George Bush
August 1990, Iraq invades Kuwait.
Iraq was left in bad economic shape following the Iran-Iraq war and there is a lot of wealth in the form of oil in Kuwait.
"No more Munichs" proclaimed George Bush Sr and he placed sanctions on Iraq to pull out. They did not want appeasement of Iraq.
30 countries join in a coalition against Iraq. This also includes some Arab nations.
The U.S.A. made sure that Israel did not join in the fear of losing the Arab support which they had against Iraq.
Kuwait was liberated after four days. There were 90,000 Iraqi casualties.
Bush did not invade Iraq or remove Saddam after Kuwait was liberated in fear of losing the Arab support.
The whole conflict had a high risk for poison gases being used.
Saddam tried to get the Israelis involved by firing SCUD missiles at them. For him he wanted the coalition against him to fall apart.
Summary: Iraq invaded Kuwait for the many oil resources that are in the Kuwait area. However, the USA and 30 other countries did not allow Iraq to be successful in invading Kuwait. Kuwait was liberated after four days and Iraq was then left alone for a period of time.
