Breakup of the Ottoman Empire and the French and English Mandates
Quote: "[The Ottoman Empire] has the body of a sick old man, who tried to appear
healthy, although his end was near." - Sir Thomas Roe
Following the Second World War the Ottoman Empire came to an end with the Treaty of Sevres. What was left of the empire was Turkey.
The former areas of the empire were divided into mandates between the French and the British.
Oil was a great interest for Britain and France in the area. They were also interested in the Suez Canal.
The 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement gave most of the territory to Britain. Britain took Iraq, Trans-Jordan, and Palestine while France got Syria and Lebanon.
All of the mandates exept for Palestine were set up with Arab Governments.
Summary: The Ottoman empire no longer had control over the Middle East, an area that they had been in control of for centuries. The remains of the empire became Turkey. Britain and France would take over the areas in the Middle East for a few years but during, and following, this time there would be many conflicts.
