The Iran-Iraq War, 1980-1988
Quote: "In the last two years, so much has been accomplished in our country that it
cannot be believed." -Ayatollah Khomeini
In Iran the Shiite revolution takes place which replaces the Shah with Ayatollah Kohmeini, 1979.
This held concern for Saddam Hussein the Sunni leader in Iraq.
Kohmeini was very anti-American so the Americans supported Iraq. The United States and Iraq were allies throughout the 70s and 80s.
War breaks out in the fear that the revolution will spread to Iraq. It was basically started as a religion based war although they did claim some territory of each other.
In the war there were also chemical gases being used mainly by Iraq on their enemies. This was very much against former agreements in the world of how war can be fought.
The UN gets involved in 1988 mainly due to the economic issues. A formal treaty with no gains is signed in 1990.
Summary: The Iran-Iraq was a very long war. It started over religious difference with a few territorial disputes. The United Nations eventually had to step in to stop the fighting.
