Abdication of the tsar February/March revolution 1917
Began with riots and strikes in Petrograd. Even the army joined the protesters.
The February revolution caused the abdication of the Tsar Nicolas ll.
The Tsar was replaced with a provisional government
Diarchy ensues between the Provisional Government and the Petrograd Soviet.
Petrograd Soviet, a large group of workers in St. Petersburg, and the Provisional government are the two strong factions.(political groups)
The provisional government was led by Prince Lvov and was then replaced by Alexander Kerensky.
They both tried to keep Russia in the First World War. Both the leaders were unpopular.
Vladimir Lenin, who was a communist, returns from exile back to Russia in April.
Germans helped assist him by giving him a train and passage through Finland.
Lenin states the April Theses denouncing the war.
Summary: In February/March 1917 Russia was not happy with the governing of the country which was run by Tsar Nicolas ll. Due to many protests and riots the Tsar abdicated the throne. A provisional government was then set up to replace the Tsar. The provisional government along with the Petrograd Soviet were the two leading political groups of the time. However, both these groups wanted to remain in the First World War and were therefore unpopular. It was when Vladimir Lenin retourned thatwar was denounced by him.
